First off, it’s helpful to define what a turd is and what a turd is not. What is turd-nature? Turds simply are not inspiring, not transcending. The sight of them is not something that makes you want to reach for better and better ways of being and living in this world and beyond. They stink. They are something that stifle the heart and the mind.

Sometimes turds are polished so well and gleam with the right dreamy colors and textures so as to help us believe that they are NOT really turds. The colors are different. The lurid smells are not there. They are alluring on the surface. They sparkle. They gleam. They are beautiful to gaze upon, but they are merely façades of beauty; Shells of false transcendence.

And we have all been there. Polishing turds. Making the best of things. Looking for the crumbs of beauty that transform the world and grow great things that DO inspire us to be better people and connect with our hearts. This would be the opposite of turd-nature, which I call beauty. Beauty that informs, beauty that connects and beauty that is inspiring like stargazing. It feels infinite, it feels wise, it feel inspiring.

As a designer I hope to do more than just polish turds by push pixels around the screen. I dream of adding to the transformational beauty of the world just like stargazing does by the things I create and put into the world. This is why I make things. I do it for the beauty on the INSIDE as well as the OUTSIDE.
